"It all started when ..."

Established in 1964 by Alfred B. Vieira, New Bedford Office Machine Company has been in New Bedford since the beginning. Mr. Vieira started in the office machine business in 1950, working for the Underwood Corporation in it's New Bedford branch. Typewriters, adding machines and bookkeeping machines were the workhorses of the modern office. When Underwood decided to open dealerships instead of Corporate offices in the early 1960s, Mr. Vieira went to work for Smith Office Equipment in New Bedford, being it's only technician at the time. He decided to open his own shop, renting space from his friend and proprietor of New Bedford Cash Register, Robert G. Pearce, on Spring Street in New Bedford.

Mr. Vieira obtained the Facit-Odhner dealership, along with Lathem Time Recorder and later the Olympia Precision Business Machine dealership. By 1970, the business had outgrown the garage they worked out of, and they purchased the former Star Market on Court Street in New Bedford, where we are still located today.

Jeff Medeiros was hired as a part time technician in 1977, right out of high school. Mr. Vieira patiently taught Jeff the office machine repair business, so Mr. Vieira became mostly the salesman and Jeff the serviceman. Mr. Pearce retired and sold New Bedford Cash Register in 1984, so Mr. Vieira purchased his half of the building (there were always two separate business), and when Mr. Vieira retired in 1988, Jeff purchased New Bedford Office Machine.

By this time, typewriters were going the way of the horse and buggy, so copiers became the focus of the business. Beginning with Olympia copiers, then acquiring a Sanyo copier dealership, and then a Copystar/Mita Dealership in 1993. Along the way, printers and fax machines were added to the lineup, with HP, Samsung and Okidata highlighted.

In 2000, the typewriter company owned and operated by John Durant, Independent Business Machines, along with his son Mike and daughter Lori, was purchased by New Bedford Office Machine and Mike was hired as a technician. John retired and Lori decided not to continue in the Office Machine business.

Servicing almost all makes and models of copiers, laser and dot matrix printers, time recorders and large format/plotters, New Bedford Office Machine is still a locally owned and operated business committed to serving the Greater New Bedford and SouthCoast area.
